Over four days in July 2003, young people flocked to an island in the Danube in Belgrade.

“Mired in what, from the outside, looked like true Balkan chaos,” a visiting reporter wrote, “the festival always looked as if it was on the brink of falling apart.”

It didn’t, but it showed us Serbia’s shady side. “Even those who don’t see eye to eye with the organisers are now willing to give them some respect for pulling it off,” the article concluded.
