But Yes, We Might
Barack Obama says he stands for change we can believe in. But what might that mean in practice?
The following exchange with the FT’s senior commentator, Philip Stephens, sheds some light on this.

Subject: The Road to JerusalemDear Philip,
I’ve just been reading your comments on Barack Obama’s “precious political capital” and his “authority among Israelis, Palestinians and in the wider Arab world”.
Why, in the space of 1096 words, was there no room for these 12, plus some analysis of their impact on said precious capital and authority?
“Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided.”
You devote a paragraph to Israeli intransigence, and another to its likely impact on Palestinian disunity. Why is there not a third questioning America’s partisan influence on all this?
After all, Obama’s comment on Jerusalem was no aberration.
Best regards,
Daniel Simpson
